Big news for pet owners in Marion County! A new ordinance now requires pet owners to microchip their animals.
Indianapolis Animal Care Services will spend a year educating pet owners about microchipping before any citations are issued.
The goal is to help relieve pressure on shelters in the county so that if a pet gets lost and is found it can more easily be returned to their owner. This will free up more space in overcrowded shelters.
Microchips are now the ONLY valid form of "Permanent ID." Veterinarians or anyone else who implants microchips shall inform animal care services of the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the owners of the dogs and cats, and the microchip identification numbers.
Another new law affects dogs that are not spayed or neutered. The Unaltered Dog Registry requires dog owners to register these pets (6 months and older). The registry is free.
IACS officials say when the registry goes live, the group will post step-by-step instructions on their website and social media to make it easy for you to get your dog registered.
